The SBL International Meeting is held
annually outside North America. It provides a unique forum for international
scholars who are unable to attend the North American meeting and for all who
wish to engage more directly SBL's growing international membership and
scholarship.
Highlights from the 2024 International Meeting
The 2024 International Meeting at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, the Netherlands was a tremendous success. Over 500 persons including members, exhibitors and others gathered in the financial district of the city to share new and emerging knowledge in biblical studies. Thanks to everyone who joined us for this remarkable meeting, with particular thanks to our hosts at VU. Special thanks are also due to Peeters Publishers, who produced the program book and continue to support the International Meeting in multiple ways. Among the highlights at the meeting was an opening reception that featured reflections on the intellectual heritage of Amsterdam and the contributions of the university.
After fifteen years of hard work, the Brill Encyclopedia on
Early Christianity was launched at the meeting. This six-volume set represents the work of
over four hundred scholars with editorial leadership from key VU faculty.
The Status of Women in the Profession Committee honored the
work of Christl Maier. In an interview with SWIPC member Juliana Claassens,
Christl Maier spoke of her career as a feminist biblical scholar from Germany.
Four recipients of
SBL travel awards from India,
Russia, Brazil, and Nigeria enriched the meeting with their presentations.
We look forward to next year's meeting and hope you will join us in Uppsala, Sweeden.
